Paula, Povoa & Jerge
Páula, Povoa And Jerge’s coming together was a happy accident. The effervescent Paris-based dance electronic trio have all worked independently in well-known bands, and cross-fertilised now and again on musical projects, but they’d never played together as a trio until a couple of years ago. What was supposed to be a one-off collaboration produced some extraordinary musical chemistry, the catalyst for an explosion of creativity. Made up of Brazilian / French singer Páula, who also fronts Diederdas, producer Jules Rosset aka Povoa who has released tracks on Sven Vath’s Cocoon Recordings and Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried Records, and Jerge - who assists Ed Banger-affiliated über-producer Myd and plays in Christine & The Queens’ live band… together they are a force to be reckoned with.
Technically speaking, PPJ started life as a one-off project in a Normandy lockdown two years ago, though for the whole story, we have to go back to Lille in northern France, where the three musicians were firm friends as teenagers and in their early 20s. Musical prodigies Jerge and Povoa met at the local jazz conservatoire around 15 years ago, back before they were interested in production, with Jerge on drums and Povoa on bass. Vocalist Páula, meanwhile, was born in Brazil but grew up in Lille; she met Jerge, and the pair shared a house together while Povoa was living in London. Naturally, they all eventually branched out into the big wide world, as talented kids from small towns tend to do. Paris and Rio de Janeiro beckoned, and sometimes Italy too.
The remarkable chemistry between the trio is infectious, and the band are beginning to build a reputation for themselves on the touring circuit, infusing rooms with joy and abandon, melting the hardest of hearts and forcing miserable people to smile. The world needs more PPJ!
