Gan Gemi
Gan Gemi (real name Thomas Gangemi) was only 10-years-old when he first realised that being an artist was his calling. After watching a family friend on holiday program a drum groove using GarageBand, Thomas was inspired to replicate what he’d witnessed: he did so with nothing more than a microphone, laptop and a borrowed synthesiser (alongside picking up his first instrument).
Gan Gemi spent the next six years simply listening, learning and developing his ability, resulting in him becoming a technically skilled, prolific and mesmerising producer - creating an incredibly varied yet unique sound.
Being brought up on the likes of Stevie Wonder, Anderson. Paak and Childish Gambino, Gan Gemi first delved into production by creating beat tapes akin to early Tom Misch, Kanye West and J Dilla.
Heavily inspired by artists such as Alice Coltrane, Ichiko Aoba and Flying Lotus, on this EP Gan Gemi builds a sonic landscape which incorporates all the elements that he loves from Hip Hop, Spiritual Jazz and Electronic music, whilst keeping a cohesive and vivid narrative throughout.
Created in Gan Gemi’s bedroom whilst he was developing his production and compositional skills (alongside studying for his A-Levels), the ‘Runner’ EP represents his journey of discovery and growth. Drums, guitar, piano and chimes are layered alongside his sister's vocals throughout multiple tracks. The EP transcends what you would expect from a 17-year-old in the peak of his education.
Thomas’ intent as a producer is clearly expressed on The Runner EP, conjuring a vivid picture in your mind whilst listening.
