A. Top ten:  (no particular order)

1. www.digitalmediawire.com

Ned Sherman's growing platform for fair,

honest, open communication about

digital media.

2. www.musically.com

Paul Brindley and Toby Slater's UK

counterpart, but a global must read of

its own.

3. www.paidcontent.com

The slickest source for a once over on

the digital media happenings of the day.

4. www.Valleywag.com

Follow the money, especially the seed

money, in Silicon Valley.

5. www.gerdleonhard.net

If you're following digital media,

following Gerd is a good idea.

6. www.theregister.co.uk

The most comprehensive world view

of digital media news.

7. www.avc.blogs.com/a_vc/

Fred Wilson is the keenest observer

of the digital media money market,

and his blog practices what he

preaches -- he experiments with ads

and new media approaches. A must

read.

8. http://joi.ito.com

Joi's Japan-based global view is

cutting-edge and he lives a life

observed through his almost constant

Internet presence.

9. www.shirky.com

Clay Shirky is the sharpest new

media critic alive.

10. www.lefsetz.com

Lefsetz speaks from the gut, and we

all need to listen to our gut every now

and then.

B. Second top ten:

Experiences -- there so much more

to do with digital media than just read

about it. Here's a top ten guide to good

digital media exercises:

1. Daily, read www.boingboing.net.

Yes, it's a good read, and maybe it

should be in category A above. But

it's an experience, and it shows how

a tight community of folks can grow

to a media company grossing a

figure reported to be approaching

a million a year.

2. Buy a digital camera or use the one

that is likely in your phone and upload

the photos to an account you create

on www.flickr.com.

3. Buy a digital video camera, record video

and upload it to a social video site like

www.youtube.com.

4. Every day, read http://online.wsj.com

and www.nytimes.com. They're more than

a great source of information and reading.

They are metaphor for the larger issue,

examples of a profitable new media

approaches from two grey old-timers

of print journalism.

5. Get an XM and/or Sirius radio, or

subscribe to them on-line. It's deeper

in music (XM) and broader in community

and free speech (Sirius) than radio dares.

6. Actually use as much of the suite

of Google offerings as possible. Create

a blog, track it with Google Analytics,

promote it with AdWords, maybe even

use AdSense to throw in some ads, all

keyed on a Gmail account.

7. Try eBay and Craigslist, to name a few

very different community-created social

e-commerce enterprises.

It's all about the interface, the program guide,

the human interaction with the programming

grid, so here are three important exercises:

8. Download, install the free iTunes software

(PC or Mac) and try using it to manage your

audio, video, podcasts and webcasts. This is

the current standard for listening to podcasts,

webcasts or managing audio or video.

9. Try computers with different operating

systems -- if a Mac user, try a Windows

and Linux machine, and so on. The

different operating systems are interesting

media interface experiences.

10. Use a Tivo (or another DVR) for at least

a month. Try TitanTV, especially if you have

a PC TV tuner.

C. Final and third top ten: Mobile

Get a wireless internet communicator

of some kind (the new Apple looks

nice, but for now I like wifi enabled

cell phones with keyboards, like the

Nokia E61, although the Cingular

offering of a wifi-less E62 could be

OK with an unlimited data account)

and try this top ten:

1. Use Google mobile services

2. Install mobile CNN

3. Try mobile Flickr

4. Try handheld Skype

5. Use another VOIP service, especially

Gizmo Project

6. Install RSS, use it on your mobile device

7. Get your e-mail on the portable device:

Profimail, Blackberry, Goodmail, there

are many good choices.

8. Install Mobile Opera browser

9. Use GPS services if your device can

support them

10. Use webcasting on your mobile device,

audio and video.
